This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 17th, 2008
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

Loons, grebes and other waterbirds have finally begun to arrive in large
numbers in the area during the past week. Peder Svingen counted more
than 3,000 waterfowl of 21 species on the 16th in the Duluth harbor, as
well as 335 HORNED GREBES off Park Point on Lake Superior, and a
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER near Interstate Island. On the 17th he counted 273
RED-NECKED GREBES off Park Point. Seventeen LONG-TAILED DUCKS were seen
on the 16th at Agate Bay in Two Harbors.

Steve Daniluk saw ten AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 15th near French
River. Frank Nicoletti also saw AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS on the 16th near
Interstate Island and at Wisconsin Point. Howard Wienberg and Harold
Nordin saw a flock of about 80 on the 17th from Skyline Drive near Enger
Tower. Jan Karin saw about 25 SANDHILL CRANES on the 16th flying over
the 1200 block of Park Point.

On the 12th at Allouez Bay in Superior, Peder Svingen relocated the
SLATY-BACKED GULL and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, as well as a THAYER'S
GULL and seven GLAUCOUS GULLS. He also saw a second-cycle GREAT
BLACK-BACKED GULL on the 12th at Canal Park in Duluth, and the
TOWNSEND’S SOLITAIRE at the Park Point Recreational Area.

Uwe Kausch had a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on the 16th in his yard at the
west end of the Wildwood Road in Duluth Township. Dave Benson saw a
flock of about 200 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on the 17th at 4th Street and 3rd
Avenue West in Duluth. Kim Eckert had a flock of 120 on the 16th along
West Kent Road near UMD.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL along CR 7, 0.5 mile south of the Stone Lake Road
in the Sax-Zim Bog was relocated on the 13th by Jason Mandich. He also
saw SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along CR 7 near the Sax Road (CR 28).

Deb Falkowski found an ICELAND GULL on the 14th on Bailey's Lake in
Virginia, along with a GLAUCOUS GULL. Anne Bier saw 24 AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS on the 17th on Silver Lake in Virginia.

Recent new arrivals in the area include AMERICAN TREE SPARROW on the
11th, AMERICAN WOODCOCK on the 13th, GREATER YELLOWLEGS on the 15th,
LESSER YELLOWLEGS on the 16th, and BROAD-WINGED HAWK, BONAPARTE'S GULL
and PURPLE MARTIN on the 17th.
