This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, April 24th, 2008

A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was found on the 19th at a private residence near
Lutsen, Cook County, but there is no public access to the location. If
accepted, this would be the 12th record for the state and the 8th for
northeast Minnesota.
Audrey Evers counted 500 RED-NECKED GREBES on the 22nd on Colby Lake in
Hoyt Lakes. Peder Svingen surveyed the Duluth harbor on the 22nd and
counted 3,016 GREATER SCAUP, 393 RED-NECKED GREBES, and 481 HORNED
GREBES. A flock of 15 TUNDRA SWANS and three AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS was
seen on the 24th along Scenic Highway 61, a mile west of the Homestead
Road. Three LONG-TAILED DUCKS were still present in Two Harbors on the
23rd at Burlington Bay.
On the 19th, Peder Svingen and Jeanie Joppru saw a second-cycle ICELAND
GULL, adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, first-cycle GREAT BLACK-BACKED
GULL, three THAYER'S GULLS and six GLAUCOUS GULLS on Allouez Bay at
Wisconsin Point.
A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen on the 24th in downtown Two Harbors
at 2nd Avenue and 3rd Street. Jeremy Ridlbauer also had one in his yard
in Grand Marais on the 17th. Mike Cary saw a flock of about 500 BOHEMIAN
WAXWINGS on the 20th at 21st Avenue West and Superior Street in Duluth.
Kim Eckert saw one on the 21st along the West Kent Road near the UMD
campus.
Kim Eckert and Barb Akre heard a LONG-EARED OWL on the 17th along Lake
County Road 2, 18.5 miles north of MN Highway 61.
Recent new arrivals in the area include WILSON'S SNIPE on the 17th,
WINTER WREN on the 18th, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW on the 20th,
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET on the 21st, and BROWN THRASHER, SAVANNAH SPARROW,
and SWAMP SPARROW on the 24th.
