This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday,August 28,

Fall is definitely here, but migration seems slow in getting going. Most
of what we are seeing in the northwest is the gathering of the resident
nesters in preparation for the journey south. Few northern migrants are
being see yet. However there are small signs that migration has begun -
shorebirds are coming through, and swallows are mostly gone. Nighthawks
are coming through now.

Milt Blomberg visited Glendalough SP on August 23 where he found an
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER.

Doug Johnson observed a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL on the Nicollet Trail at
Itasca State Park on August 23.

Grand Forks birder, Russ Wilber, reported several RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS
on the Polk County side of the Red River of the North on August 24.

In Red Lake County on August 22, Shelley Steva saw three TURKEY VULTURES
about 5 miles east of Plummer.

On August 14, Shelley counted 15 CHIMNEY SWIFTS in Thief River Falls,
Pennington County. There was a COMMON NIGHTHAWK flying over our yard
near Thief River Falls on August 27.

Almost 2800 shorebirds of 18 species were tallied at Agassiz NWR in
Marshall County on August 24, but few other migrants; shorebirds
included one BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, and one WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER. Most
of the birds were at Tamarack and Webster Pools in the interior of the
refuge.

Betty Snyder reported a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER in Cass County on August
21, at Anderson's Cove on Leech Lake about 8 miles north of Walker.

Kelly Larson reported that there were many migrating COMMON NIGHTHAWKS
in both Clearwater and Beltrami Counties on the past weekend. Also
present in Clearwater County were many RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS.

Doug Johnson caught a nice warbler wave on August 24 off CR 29 on Meadow
Lake Tails in the Chippewa NF in Beltrami County. He saw GOLDEN-WINGED
WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER, as well as the more
common NASHVILLE WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE
WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, OVENBIRD, and COMMON YELLOWTHROAT. A
YELLOW-THROATED VIREO was also seen.
