Wrens will make their own voluminous nests, several beginnings in fact, and
then the female comes to decide which she likes and finishes that one.
Woodpeckers and the like excavate their own homes. If they use yours it
really won't matter what you put in it, just that the hole is the right size
and the house is positioned properly.

 

You can learn more by getting a copy of Carrol Henderson's Woodworking for
Wildlife, or Stephen Kress's Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds. Both
books are chock full of info on nesting, boxes, siting the boxes, plantings,
etc.
