I spent most of today (Friday, February 08, 2008) birding in Douglas and
Otter Tail Counties.
Douglas County:
I was surprised to find 6 Pine Grosbeaks (five males and 1 female/immature)
at 9:03 a.m. approximately 1.5 miles north of Nelson, MN (approximately 5
miles east of Alexandria, MN. The birds were on the west side of Douglas
County Road 9 between the house at fire number 2180 and the Northland
Woolens, Inc. building.
The birds appeared to be feeding on the buds of 10-15 foot tall spruce
trees.
I also saw a flock of 15 Common Redpolls in Douglas County south of
Interstate 94 on the west side of Bur Oak Road which is a dead end road and
two Rough-legged Hawks in two different locations in the county
Otter Tail County:
In the afternoon around 1:00 p.m. I discovered six more Pine Grosbeaks (1
male and 5 females/immatures) in Ottertail County in the small town of
Clitherall, MN (approximately 4 miles east of Battle Lake, MN). The birds
were feeding on crab apples on the north side of the garage of a gray house
on N Oak Street.
Also feeding on the crab apple trees was a single Bohemian Waxwing and a
single American Robin. A flock of 50 or so Common Redpolls was feeding at a
variety of feeders on the south side of the house.
