As some of you know, I have been fortunate to capture, band, and observe
many Northern Shrikes in Ashland and Bayfield counties over the past few
years. One of the first things I learned by having birds in hand was that
ageing them in the field while birding isn't as easy as I had thought.
Because this is an outstanding year for Northern Shrikes in much of
Wisconsin (but alas not here in my neck of the woods), I thought I would
share a bit on what I have learned about separating adults from immatures in
this species.
I wrote up a brief overview of this topic, which may someday appear on the
Wisconsin eBird page. For now, I've created my own blog to host the article
