This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, January 24,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You

We went into the deep freeze this week, but by the time you read this,
the northwest should be slowly rising in temperature, until by the
weekend we should again be able to go birding without shivering. Even
with the cold, a few good sightings have been reported this week.

Two SNOWY OWLS were reported this week, both on January 22. One, a
female or immature, was found by Matt Mecklenburg in Clay County along
CR 108 near Felton Prairie. The other, reported by Jody Doll, was seen
perched on a power pole along MN 108 in Otter Tail County between Perham
and Dent.

Gretchen Mehmel reported a NORTHERN SHRIKE at Norris Camp in Lake of the
Woods County on January 19. Jeff Birchem saw a GREAT GRAY OWL along the
road from Norris Camp to Roosevelt early last week, and on January 18,
he saw 4 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE along the same road.

In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported 15-20 PINE GROSBEAKS and
three AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES at his home in Lancaster. At his cabin
northwest of Lancaster there were WILD TURKEYS, a GRAY JAY, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, DARK-EYED JUNCO, and 30-40 PINE GROSBEAKS.

Pat Rice in Beltrami County saw a BALD EAGLE on January 18, sixteen
COMMON REDPOLLS on January 19, and on January 20, DARK-EYED JUNCO and
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH.

David Cameron in rural Pennington County near Thief River Falls reported
seeing 7 GRAY PARTRIDGE daily since Thanksgiving, and on January 19, he
had a PILEATED WOODPECKER, and 15-20 PINE GROSBEAKS in his yard.

In Clay County on January 22, Matt Mecklenburg saw two GREAT HORNED
OWLS, HORNED LARKS, and SNOW BUNTINGS in addition to the SNOWY OWL
reported above.

Milton Blomberg found 120 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Staples in northeastern
Todd County on January 22. Other species seen in the county included
BALD EAGLE, two NORTHERN SHRIKES, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, AMERICAN TREE
SPARROW, SNOW BUNTINGS, and four COMMON REDPOLLS.

Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County saw a NORTHERN FLICKER on
January 24.

Thanks to Dan and Sandy Thimgan, David Cameron, Gretchen Mehmel, Jeff
Birchem , Jody Doll, Larry Wilebski, Matt Mecklenburg, Milton Blomberg,
and Pat Rice for their reports.
