FYI:

In addtion to the Advanced Birding book that Kim Eckert mentioned, I  
purchased a book  last summer, Peterson's Gulls of the Americas (Jon  
Dunn, author of the National Geographic Field Guides is a co-author).

It is chock full of photos featuring almost every possible year/cycle/ 
molt and in the back has lots of information on ID and comparison  
(including comparing Franklin's and Laughing)
