Led a trip to Chisago and Pine counties over the last weekend and our group
found 117 species of birds. Many species were observed nesting and most
would be assumed to nest in the area. We spent time birding at the Sunrise
unit of Carlos Avery WMA, Wild River State Park, St. Croix State Park and
the Nemadji State Forest, with many stops in between those locations. Here
are some of the species of birds that were found there.
Sharp-tailed Grouse - Pine County - 7:30am - CR 20, just North West of
Roberts Road.
American Bittern - Chisago County - 8:30pm - CR 57 & 470th St.
Sandhill Crane - Pine County - 7:30am - Same location as Sharp-tailed
Grouse. One pair had a very young chick with them.
Olive-sided Flycatcher - Carlton County - 10:30am - Net Lake Road, 1 mile
West of Net Lake.
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher - Carlton/Pine County - 10:30am - Birds were heard
in both counties on Saturday at the same
location as the Olive-sided Flycatcher and
another bird was seen and heard near the entrance
to St. Croix State Park at 8:30am on Sunday
morning. We observed a total of 9 species of
Flycatchers.
Common Raven - Chisago/Pine County - Common Ravens were seen and heard in a
number of areas of Pine county and a single bird
was seen in Chisago county at around
8:00am along CR 19 about 1.5 miles East of Stacy.
Red-breasted Nuthatch - Chisago/Pine County - Observed nesting at St. Croix
State Park.
Gray-cheeked Thrush - Pine County - Noon - Single bird observed feeding on
insects on a road in the town of Nickerson.
Hermit Thrush - Pine County
Wood Thrush - Pine County - St. Croix State Park.
Warblers - 14 species were seen or heard on the trip.
Blue-winged Warbler - Wild River State Park - near entrance.
Northern Waterthrush - Pine County - 3 heard in county and one seen just
West of the town of Duxbury along CR 30.
Mourning Warbler - Pine County - 9:00am - St. Croix State Park - 4 birds
were heard and seen where Hay Creek crosses
the park road West of the check in
station.
Scarlet Tanager - Carlton/Pine County
Sparrows - 12 species of Sparrows were seen or heard on the trip.
Grasshopper Sparrow - Chisago County - 3:00 pm - Wild River State Park -
near the Prairie over look.
Le Conte's Sparrow - Chisago County - 8:30pm - Just South of the American
Bittern location.
Dark-eyed Junco - Pine County - Same location as the Flycatchers on Net Lake
Road.
Bobolink - Chisago/Pine County
Brewer's Blackbird - Chisago/Pine County
Purple Finch - Pine County
