Summer has arrived and this has been a most pleasant week in the
northwest. Flowers are blooming everywhere and the landscape still
retains that vivid green of spring. Young birds of all species are
appearing as if by magic.
Beth Siverhus reported that one RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, BLACK-THROATED
GREEN WARBLERS, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, and several CONNECTICUT WARBLERS
were tallied on a BBS within the Beltrami Island State Forest in Lake of
the Woods County on June 24.
>From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported TURKEY VULTURE and UPLAND
SANDPIPER near Lancaster.
Pat DeWenter went to the Big Bog SRA near Waskish in Beltrami County on
June 20, where she heard singing CONNECTICUT WARBLERS about halfway
along the boardwalk. Other species seen there included OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER, GRAY JAY, HERMIT THRUSH, NASHVILLE WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED
WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, OVENBIRD, MOURNING WARBLER, and
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT.
At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County this week, Beth Siverhus found
VIRGINIA RAIL, and LE CONTE'S SPARROWS among many other species.
Shelley Steva , in Red Lake County on June 24, observed a FERRUGINOUS
HAWK and a MERLIN near Plummer. Other sightings included a BANK SWALLOW,
and a LARK SPARROW near the bridge in Red Lake Falls.
Nathaniel Emery reported that GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS are hatching at
Glacial Ridge NWR in Polk County this week. Other species hatching young
included SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, NORTHERN HARRIER, and SHORT-EARED OWL.
Elizabeth Almlie reported sighting REDHEADS , RING-NECKED DUCKS, and
RED-NECKED GREBES at Rydell NWR this week.
Scott Kahan reported from Becker County this week. He mentioned
TRUMPETER SWAN cygnets at Donely/Tillman WPA; other sightings included
SANDHILL CRANES, and AMERICAN BITTERN in and around Hamden Slough NWR.
Ben Fritchman reported that there are two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES in
Long Prairie in Todd County. Look for them two blocks east of US 71
north of MN 27.
Thanks to Ben Fritchman, Beth Siverhus, Elizabeth Almlie, Larry
Wilebski, Nathaniel Emery, Pat DeWenter, Scott Kahan, and Shelley Steva
for their reports.
