I saw large numbers of migrating bald eagles on the ice and soaring, starting just south of St. Paul and on to Hastings, while riding Amtrak's Empire Builder on the way to Chicago last Friday. While not a true migratory bird, many winter just far enough south to open river water to sustain their mainly fish diet, and in early spring work their way north for the summer. There a many pairs, however, who have set up permanent housekeeping in the greater Mississippi and Minnesota River Valleys.
