Folks, Incredibly, the weather cleared Saturday morning, but for the colder wind. Four
of us started in Clearwater, MN and worked our way northward to Rice and the Gilman
wastewater ponds--Sherburne-Benton, we barely touched Stearns, so another outing
to be planned to catch the the river's westside. Of the 93 species day, our incredible
highlights:
Black-throated Green Warbler in the morning sun of a Red Cedar--Clearwater wayside.
Green Heron-FOY
Catbird-FOY
Empidonax (willow or alder)-FOY
Orange-crowned Warbler-the best coloration of orange we've ever seen.
All swallows, except the Bank--high densities over the riverways.
FERRUGINOUS HAWK - immature---sketched out and will be reported.
Warblers: Yrumped, Palms, B&W (all high #'s).
The best Northern Parula occurance we've ever had... look for video gallery on the MOU site.
Swainson's Thrush
Northern Waterthrush
Peregrine Falcon, now at nest box of the Reformatory watertower.
Sites visited: Clearwater wayside, two private landowners along the Mississippi, one of which the
floodplain below is turning into a new regional park preserve of Sherburne County,
Sand Prairie WMA, Sauk Rapids Municipal Park, Bend in the River County Park (Benton),
Gilman ponds, Boy Scout Bridge of the Sauk River flood plain.
Sincerely, mjb
