This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, May 15th, 2008 sponsored
by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A juvenile PACIFIC LOON and a RED-THROATED LOON were found by Mike
Hendrickson on the 13th on Lake Superior at the Park Point recreational
area. A PIPING PLOVER was seen on the 13th by Sparky Stensaas just south
of the Sky Harbor Airport. This may be one of the birds seen the
previous week near 22nd Street. Peder Svingen saw a RED-THROATED LOON on
the 15th on Lake Superior from the recreational area, as well as an
EARED GREBE in the harbor at the rowing club. Peder also found five
RED-THROATED LOONS on the 15th at Gull Bluff on Wisconsin Point, and two
WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS in Allouez Bay. At Indian Point on the 13th, Peder
saw a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE.

Kim Eckert briefly had a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE at his feeders on the
9th on the 1900 block of West Kent Road near the UMD campus. A
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was reported by several observers during the past
week at the Park Point recreational area near the bath house. The
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER at 57th Avenue East and Juniata Street in Duluth
was still present on the 15th, as well as a HARRIS'S SPARROW.

Lissa Grover had a first-spring male SUMMER TANAGER on the 15th at her
feeder in central Grand Marais. A SUMMER TANAGER was also seen on the
13th and 14th in downtown Two Harbors at 304 2nd Avenue. A NORTHERN
MOCKINGBIRD was seen on the 14th at the same location. Another SUMMER
TANAGER was reported in Aitkin County on the 14th at a private residence
north of McGregor.

A GREAT GRAY OWL was seen on the 12th in the Sax-Zim Bog at the
Kelsey-Fraser Road and CR 29. Another GREAT GRAY OWL was seen on the
15th along CR 4, 10 miles north of Island Lake.

Mike Steffes found two singing BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLERS on the 15th
at the top of Oberg Mountain in Cook County. A male was also reported
from a feeder in Lutsen on the 12th. Three WILSON'S PHALAROPES were seen
at the Castle Danger sewage ponds on the 14th.

Earl Orf heard a YELLOW RAIL in Itasca County on the 14th along US
Highway 2, 5.6 miles east of MN Highway 65. Earl found a HUDSONIAN
GODWIT and a MARBLED GODWIT on the 15th in a flooded field along CR 10
just south of the Trout Lake community center, four to five miles south
of US Highway 169. Six HUDSONIAN GODWITS were seen on the 13th in Aitkin
County in the flooded fields along CR 15 about 3.5 miles west of Aitkin.

Recent new arrivals in the area include SEDGE WREN, GRAY CATBIRD and
NASHVILLE WARBLER on the 9th, LEAST FLYCATCHER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER and
INDIGO BUNTING on the 10th, VIRGINIA RAIL, CHIMNEY SWIFT and
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on the 11th, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on the 12th,
SORA, BLACK TERN, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, HOUSE WREN, SWAINSON'S THRUSH,
TENNESSEE WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER,
BLACKPOLL WARBLER, CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, CAPE
MAY WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, WILSON’S WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER,
BOBOLINK and NORTHERN ORIOLE on the 13th, VEERY, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER
and AMERICAN PIPIT on the 14th, and SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER and
WHIP-POOR-WILL on the 15th.
