Sax-Zim Bog
Friday, May 23, 2008
Beautiful but chilly day in the bog. Out in the morning with Mike and Kathy from Minneapolis and in the afternoon with a videographer from Florida.
HIGHLIGHTS:
2 GREAT GRAY OWLS--1.2 and 1.3 miles N of Arkola (CR52) on Stickney: 7:15 to 7:25 am. Nesting pair? Actively hunting along the east side of the road. My first GGOWs in a year and a half. Best idea may be to park about a mile up and sit and watch.
3 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS--2 along McDavitt (2-2.7mi N of Sax Rd) and 1 on Admiral 3.9 mi N of Sax Rd.
2 CONNECTICUT WARBLERS--on territory and singing. 1 at intx of McDavitt and Zim Road (N. side) and 1 on McDavitt (about 2.5 mi N of Sax Rd).
8 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE dancing on Lek at intx of CR208 and Arkola (CR52)
1 UPLAND SANDPIPER at intx of CR208 and Arkola (CR52)
AMERICAN BITTERN hunting at lek spot on N side of Arkola (CR52)
2 LECONTE'S SPARROWS singing along Stone Lake Road (S. side) near corner by lake.
Many GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS singing on territory.
20 species of WARBLERS including Bay-breasted.
2 MOOSE!...a cow and a brand new calf along Stone Lake Road half way between CR7 and the lake.
No Yellow-bellied Flycatchers, Alder Flycatchers or Mourning Warblers (though other groups had the MOWA today)
Half of the cars on the gravel roads slowed down for us so as not to 'dust' us...An improvement!
