Bill Stauffer and I birded around the Aitkin County area this last
weekend and found a total of 134 species. A few of the notables: a GREAT
GRAY OWL along Aitkin County Road 18 (3/10 of a mile east of the Hebron
Cemetery); SHARP-TAILED GROUSE in two areas also along C.R.18 (the first
at 1/2 mile east of hwy 169, the other about 3 miles east of hwy 169);
singing LINCOLN'S SPARROWS at the junction of C.R. 18 and Pietz's Road;
BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES on the north side of Gun Lake along twhp 283, one
mile west of C.R.5.
Garrison Bay: several hundred CASPIAN TERNS, FORSTER'S TERNS and COMMON
TERNS as well as several shorebirds including RUDDY
TURNSTONES,SANDERLINGS and DUNLINS.
