Hi All--
Erika and I put the water feature to sleep for the winter this morning, 13
November in Rice Co. In early October we had turned it off for two weeks
while we were away and were amazed at the flock of warblers that was
immediately attracted to the empty stream. Apparently the birds were
feasting on insect larvae stranded on the rocks.
No warblers today, but large numbers of robins and Dark-eyed Juncos, which
had not been in evidence previously, immediately focked to the now
non-flowing stream. With them was a hybrid flicker, which fed at the suet
and along the "dry" stream bed. This bird had salmon-colored feather
shafts.
