This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 2,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
Fall colors are at or near their peak in northwest Minnesota, and the
first hard frost and big wind will bring the leaves tumbling down . We
have had lovely fall weather in the northwest for the past week, and
migration is bringing the last passerines down. Waterfowl are collecting
on all the wetlands.
>From Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported the sighting of a
SHORT-EARED OWL in northern Kittson County on September 28.
In Bemidji, Beltrami County, Pat DeWenter, reported that a NORTHERN
GOSHAWK crashed into their window on October 1, and wheeled away to
recover elsewhere.
At the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds on September 27, I
found a collection of geese including CANADA GEESE, CACKLING GEESE, and
even a few SNOW GEESE. Also present were 8 TUNDRA SWANS, and at least
one HORNED GREBE. Several species of ducks, and both FRANKLIN'S GULLS
and RING-BILLED GULLS were also there. A single BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER was
seen on the grass surrounding the southernmost cell.
Steve Dahl reported two BALD EAGLES about 3.5 miles east of Plummer in
Red Lake County on September 27.
The spotted towhee seen at Bob O'Connor's place in Moorhead was last
seen on Saturday, September 27.
Amy Drake in Otter Tail County observed three NORTHERN FLICKERS in their
yard on September 2. DARK-EYED JUNCOS have also arrived in Otter Tail
County. On September 29, Alma Ronningen had a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
at the feeder and an OVENBIRD in the yard also. On October 1, she
observed a NORTHERN HARRIER, and a BELTED KINGFISHER.
Thanks to Alma Ronningen, Amy Drake, Bob O'Connor, Pat DeWenter, and
Steve Dahl for their reports.
