This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 9,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
Migration is winding down, as the last summer residents from further
north migrate through, and those that stop for the winter here are
starting to arrive. We have also a hint of weather to come as the wind
gets colder, and sunshine less warm. Leaves are clinging to the trees ,
but the next windy storm will bring many of them down.
John Braastad at his home along the Red Lake River east of Thief River
Falls in Pennington County saw a GREAT GRAY OWL perched across the river
from his home on Friday, October 3. Could this be a harbinger of more
owls this winter?
At Agassiz NWR in Marshall County, John reported a PEREGRINE FALCON at
Parker Pool along CR 7 on October 3. On October 6, he saw SNOW BUNTINGS
along the auto tour route. All the suitable habitat is hosting GREATER
YELLOWLEGS. The refuge is still closed due to the discovery of several
dead pelicans with Newcastle disease, but very few have been found, and
the refuge is expected to reopen again soon.
In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported the first NORTHERN SHRIKE on
October 3, and a BARRED OWL on October 5 near Lancaster in the northern
part of the county.
Stan Wood at Roseau River WMA in Roseau County reported SNOW BUNTINGS on
October 5. Shelley Steva and I made a trip to Hayes Lake State Park on
October 4 where we found RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET,
GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and
DARK-EYED JUNCO among others.
>From Lake of the Woods County, Martin Kehoe reported SPRUCE GROUSE and
BOREAL CHICKADEES near his cabin deep within the Beltrami Island State
Forest last week.
Thanks to John Braastad, Larry Wilebski, Martin Kehoe, and Stan Wood for
their reports.
Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
