This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, October 23,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The leaves mostly came tumbling down this week with the exception of
many of the poplar and cottonwoods which require a hard frost to end the
season. Migration is progressing and waterfowl are starting to move.
Numbers of birds from the north are increasing, and all are getting more
difficult to approach as they are afraid of getting shot. Sparrow
migration is in full swing and soon we will see only the winter
residents.

On October 19, Bob Dunlap and Ben Fritchman found two ibis at the SE
corner of the junction of Wilkin CR 26 and MN 9.

Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported a surprise visitor to their feeders in
Battle Lake, Otter Tail County, on October 22 when a CAROLINA WREN
showed up. The bird continues to visit the Thimgan yard as of Thursday,
October 23.

In Alexandria, Douglas County on October 21, Deb Johnson observed
migrant AMERICAN ROBINS, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, FIELD SPARROW,
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCOS, COMMON
GRACKLES, PURPLE FINCH, RED CROSSBILLS, and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS. A
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER was also seen.

Dave Hochhalter in Becker County reported COMMON LOON, AMERICAN COOT,
RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN CARDINAL, and FOX SPARROW among other
species in their yard this week.

Matt Mecklenburg in Clay County on October 19 saw four BLACK-BILLED
MAGPIES a half mile south of the intersection of 57th Ave N and 280th
St. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen east of the intersection of 80th St and
80th Ave N. Many other migrants were also seen including one TRUMPETER
SWAN.

Bruce Olson reported seeing BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES about 3 miles west of
Thief River Falls in Pennington County this week.

John Braastad reported a NORTHERN SHRIKE seen at Farmes Pool at Agassiz
NWR, Marshall County on October 17. On October 19 I saw two ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, one of which was a beautiful dark phase bird at Agassiz NWR. A
large assortment of geese and ducks including many NORTHERN SHOVELERS,
and GADWALLS, several BUFFLEHEADS, and at least two HOODED MERGANSERS
were seen on Headquarters Pool.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County reported BALD EAGLE, BLACK-BILLED
MAGPIE, BLUE JAY, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW,
HARRIS'S SPARROW, and PURPLE FINCH at his cabin north of Lancaster on
October 19.

Gretchen Mehmel in Lake of the Woods County reported seeing SPRUCE
GROUSE, RUFFED GROUSE, and AMERICAN WOODCOCKS in the Beltrami Island
State Forest this week. 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen on October 18 south
of Cecil's Landing on the Roosevelt Road.

Thanks to Bob Dunlap, Ben Fritchman, Bruce Olson, Dave Hochhalter, Deb
Johnson, Dan and Sandy Thimgan, Gretchen Mehmel, John Braastad, Larry
Wilebski, and Matt Mecklenburg for their reports.
