Volunteers Needed for Ornithological Survey of Selva Bananito, Costa Rica
The Association of Conservation Landowners, a new organization which seeks to
provide support for conservation-minded owners with advice and technical
support, is looking for a group of volunteers to conduct biological survey work at
Selva Bananito, Costa Rica, from October 22 to November 2, 2008.
Selva Bananito is a privately owned reserve on Costa Rica’s Atlantic versant,
15 km inland from the Caribbean. About 300 species of birds have been
recorded in and around the reserve. Selva Bananito borders La Amistad National Park,
and constitutes an important area for altitudinal and seasonal migrants. The
altitude in Bananito ranges from 100 to 300 meters, with forest up to 900
meters in La Amistad accessible from the Lodge. The reserve contains 850 hectares
(2000 acres) of primary old growth forest, as well as organic fruit orchards,
rivers, wetlands and secondary forests in various stages of succession.
The purpose of the trip will be to expand the list of birds found in and
around the reserve, to identify critical habitat for species of particular
interest, and to lay the groundwork for future management decisions. We are trying to
keep the price of the trip at near cost as our primary aim is to attract a
group of people able to assist in the biological inventory of Selva Bananito,
and to help the reserve owners to document the importance of the reserve as a
buffer for La Amistad National Park and to the conservation of biodiversity in
the region. This is a non-profit venture.
We need a core group of people who are familiar with the region’s birds or
are at least competent birders, but Selva Bananito is a very family-friendly
place, Significant others, spouses and family members and non-birding friends are
also welcome. The guides working for the lodge are excellent, and those not
interested in birding can choose to take part in a wide variety of other
activities, including canopy tours, zipline courses, hikes, etc. or simply lay in a
hammock and relax. Non-survey related activities would be at the regular
prices charged by the lodge. Projected price of the trip excluding airfare will be
about $1200. This includes transport in country and two nights in San Jose.
Selva Bananito is one of the few “ecolodges” in Costa Rica worthy of that
appellation, while managing to provide accommodations that qualify as luxurious.

In addition, we’ll go down to visit the- Kèköldi Scientific Center indigenous
run birding “tower” on the coast, right in the middle of the raptor
migration route along the coast,. We’ll be there at during peak migration, and the
concentration of raptors flying over the tower is quite spectacular.
