This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, June 12,
2008 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You
may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

This has been a rough week for birds and birders alike with all the
wind, rain, and storms. That said, some of the missing species that we
noted last week have arrived, including the flycatchers, vireos, and
wrens. Most of the migrant warblers have also moved on, getting on with
the business of nesting further north or east.

Beth Siverhus reported a WILSON'S WARBLER in Warroad, Roseau County on
June 9.

Doug Johnson, reported species seen on June 8 at Lake Bemidji State
Park, Beltrami County. The most interesting was a lone YELLOW-BELLIED
FLYCATCHER heard calling. Also present were EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, LEAST
FLYCATCHER, GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, and SCARLET
TANAGER. He also saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at Diamond Point Park at a
nest hole.

Gary Tischer reported that a LONG-TAILED DUCK was seen June 1 on Farmes
Pool, Agassiz NWR, Marshall County. Diana Morkassel near Warren reported
a GRAY CATBIRD, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE among other species in her yard on
June 5.

Here in Pennington County, John Braastad, while kayaking, saw two male
HOODED WARBLERS along the Red Lake River a few miles northeast of Thief
River Falls on June 8. Unfortunately, the area is inaccessible except
through private property. Also in the county on the weekend, I saw
SANDHILL CRANES, MARBLED GODWITS, CHIMNEY SWIFT, SEDGE WREN, LE CONTE'S
SPARROW, SCARLET TANAGER, BOBOLINK, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, all in
Smiley Township.

Elizabeth Almlie reported from Rydell NWR in Polk County that a
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER had been sighted this week.

Matt Mecklenburg found a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER north of Downer on 70th
Ave S about three-quarters of a mile east of MN 9 in Clay County on June
12.

>From Becker County, Mary Ault reported a brood of 10 COMMON GOLDENEYE
chicks and a pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS southwest of Detroit Lakes on
June 10. Scott Kahan mentioned SANDHILL CRANES, MARBLED GODWIT, and the
ever present COMMON YELLOWTHROAT in and around Hamden NWR. Audrey Savig
observed a GRAY CATBIRD at Audubon. Betty Hochhalter reported an INDIGO
BUNTING at their feeder on June 5.

At Rothsay in Wilkin County, Parker Backstrom found a HENSLOW'S SPARROW
which was relocated on June 9 by the VENT tour group. LE CONTE'S
SPARROWS were also seen in the area. From the south side of the town of
Rothsay, turn W on Wilkin CR 26, go 4 miles and turn N on 300th Ave, go
2 miles and turn W on 190 St., go 0.1 mile to the first 2-track road
going north, and listen along the road for the sparrow.

Ben Fritchman reported a SNOWY EGRET just north of Olson's Bay Rd in
Douglas County on the east side of the Grant /Douglas County line on
June 8.

In Grant County, Ben found 8 CATTLE EGRETS on Ashby Estates Rd with the
cattle near the lake.

Thanks to Audrey Savig, Ben Fritchman, Beth Siverhus, Betty Hochhalter,
Diana Morkassel, Doug Johnson, Elizabeth Almlie, Gary Tischer, John
Braastad, Mary Ault, Matt Mecklenburg, Kim Eckert, and Scott Kahan for
their reports.

Please report bird sightings to Jeanie Joppru by email, no later than
Thursday each week, at ajjoppru at wiktel.com OR call the Detroit Lakes
Chamber's toll free number: 1-800-542-3992. Detroit Lakes area birders
please call 847-9202. Please include the county where the sighting took
place. The next scheduled update of this report is Thursday, June 19,
2008.
