This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, October 9th, 2008

A CATTLE EGRET was found by Kim Eckert on the 8th on a rock behind the
Lester River visitors information building in east Duluth. Karl Bardon
and Erik Bruhnke saw two WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and two LONG-TAILED DUCKS
at Park Point on the 7th. Erik also found a SHORT-EARED OWL at Park
Point on the 9th flying over Lake Superior. Mike Hendrickson saw a
ROSS'S GOOSE, RUDDY DUCK, and GREAT EGRET on the 5th at the 40th Avenue
West Erie Pier area. Mike saw an adult PARASITIC JAEGER on the 6th at
Park Point as well as six SURF SCOTERS. Karl Bardon had a flyover
SMITHS LONGSPUR at the Hawk Ridge main overlook on the 3rd.
Tony Hertzel and Peder Svingen saw a female-type HARLEQUIN DUCK on the
4th at Paradise Beach in Cook County, about 14 miles northeast of Grand
Marais. Shawn Conrad found the bird on the same day, along with a female
BLACK SCOTER. On the 4th Shawn also found a ROSS'S GOOSE at the Two
Harbors golf course, an adult THAYERS GULL at Knife River, a
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER at the Beaver Bay sewage ponds, and another at
the west end of Stoney Point Drive. Kim Eckert found two SURF SCOTERS on
the 9th at Taconite Harbor in Cook County.
