This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, September 18th, 2008
sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.

A WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE was reported on the 12th by Mike Resch at the Park
Point recreational area. The bird was seen and heard near the boardwalk
south of the ball fields, but has not been relocated. On the 10th Mike
reported two first-year GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULLS and a second-year
LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on the Minnesota side of the Superior Entry.
Chris Mansfield and Mike saw a WESTERN GREBE on the 11th on Lake
Superior at the Sky Harbor Airport, as well as a MARSH WREN at the 40th
Avenue West Erie Pier area. They also saw BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS,
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and LEAST SANDPIPERS at
40th Avenue West.

Peder Svingen, Jan Green and others saw 23 warbler species and five
vireo species at the Park Point recreational area on the 12th. A HOODED
WARBLER was apparently seen on the 13th at the recreational area
playground, but I have not heard any additional information.
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen on the 12th in Two Harbors. LAPLAND
LONGSPURS, HORNED LARKS, AMERICAN PIPITS, and RUSTY BLACKBIRDS have also
been reported from the area during the past week.

More the 22,400 raptors were counted at Hawk Ridge on the 15th,
including 12,660 BROAD-WINGED HAWKS and two SWAINSON'S HAWKS. Three dark
morph SWAINSON’S HAWKS and the season’s first GOLDEN EAGLE were seen on
the 17th. Single RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS flew by on the 13th and the
16th, and flyover BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS were seen on the 12th, 16th,
and 18th.

The next scheduled update of this report will be on Thursday, September
25th.
