Occasional in St. Louis County in the Spring season
Found by Juliann Grahn near Cook, MN It has been coming to bird feeders on private property and not visible from the road. Bird with large pale bill and dark eye. There is an yellowish eye ring that is slightly interrupted at the midline both on the inner and outer sides. Feathers are mixture of red, orange and a greenish yellow. Has a small red crest on head. Wings and tail feathers darker than rest of body not the black of a scarlet or western tanager. Size is larger than a purple finch and close to the size of an evening grosbeak both which have also been eating from feeders. It has been eating black oil sunflower seeds.
