Iceland Gull in St. Louis County
2011-06-04

'Rare Regular' in Minnesota - Five or fewer records in St. Louis County for the Summer season

Second-cycle Thayer's Gull seen on both sides of the Minnesota-Wisconsin state line at the Superior Entry, 4 June 2011. A first-cycle type Thayer's Gull seen through 31 May was refound 2 June, so at least two different individuals have now been documented for the summer season. It will be interesting to see if one or both of these individuals continues to linger at the Superior Entry. The Superior Entry can be reached by boat or by hiking out past the Sky Harbor Airport on Park Point. The Wisconsin side of the Superior Entry can also be accessed by taking Moccasin Mike Road off US 2/US 53 in Superior. Gulls and other birds of interest often fly back and forth across the Entry and can thereby be recorded in both states.
