Common in St. Louis County in the Winter season

This apparent hybrid Common Goldeneye X Hooded Merganser was first spotted by Paul Jantscher on 12 December 2011 at Canal Park, Duluth- we believe this bird is an immature male. Also present at this same location beginning 12 December 2011 is an adult male hybrid Common Goldeneye X Hooded Merganser which is clearly the same individual seen last year at this same location from 27 November 2010-16 January 2011. Although this is still a relatively rare hybrid combination, I have seen eight individuals in MN, and reports seem to be increasing the last few years. The adult males are very handsome little ducks.
