Eared Grebe in St. Louis County
2013-05-06

Occasional in St. Louis County in the Spring season

Eared Grebe (Podiceps nigricollis) found by Peder Svingen and Jan & Larry Kraemer at the 12th Street public access, Park Point, Duluth, 6 May 2013. This species is best considered Casual at Duluth and along the North Shore of Lake Superior, but this is the third report for the North Shore this spring following one at Grand Marais, Cook County 17 April (image by David Brislance at http://moumn.org/cgi-bin/recent.pl?rec_id=3895) and one at Two Harbors, Lake County 5 May (image by Shawn Zierman at http://moumn.org/recent/4025-1.jpg). This endearing species is even more unexpected in NW Wisconsin, but Robbye Johnson found a tight group of 5 Eared Grebes at Wisconsin Point, Douglas County this past weekend (5 May).
