Rufous Hummingbird in St. Louis County

'Casual' in Minnesota - Five or fewer records in St. Louis County for the Summer season

Adult male Rufous Hummingbird at Duluth, St. Louis County, Minnesota, 26 July 2013. This bird was first seen by Jerry Lundgren on the 24th, and has not been seen since the 26th. I received a third-hand report of this bird on the 1st of August, and requested permission to upload images and submit the record to the MOU Records Committee. Fourteen images taken by Joyce Johnson between 6:35 AM and 6:42 AM on the 26th were sent to me, and four of them were cropped and sharpened to create this composite image. No exposure adjustments of any kind were made to the original images. Minnesota has a total of 13 records of Rufous Hummingbird and only one of these was in St. Louis County -- an adult male in Alden Township, 16 June 1979 (The Loon 51:197). There are three additional Minnesota records accepted as Rufous/Allen's Hummingbird -- in other words, they were clearly Selasphorus hummingbirds, but could not be identified at the species level. One of the three Rufous/Allen's records was from St. Louis County, an adult female at Laura Erickson's feeder in Duluth, 16 November - 3 December 2004 (The Loon 77:12).
