Sabine's Gull in Stearns County
2016-09-05

'Rare Regular' in Minnesota - Five or fewer records in Stearns County for the Fall season

Reposted image of juvenile Sabine's Gull observed and photographed by Steve Broste on Sept. 5, 2016 at Albany Sewage Ponds, Stearns County. Initially thought to be Bonaparte's Gull, but other viewers identified it as Sabine's. Thicker bill, small size and brownish back distinguish from other juvenile gulls. Located in westernmost pond, it has since been observed by other birders on Sept. 6 and 7. It has been the only bird of its kind in a large group of larger Franklin's Gulls.
