The 2023-Summer Season 1 June through 31 July 2023 Ann E. Kessen and Kimberly A. Emerson |
A lucky observer east of Littlefork in Koochiching County looked out their living room window and saw the county’s first White-winged Dove perched on a shepherd’s crook in the yard. Common Gallinules were found for the first time in Douglas County at the end of July. It was a nice surprise to find Limpkins in two counties during the season. One was at Osceola Landing, Chisago County, for one day in mid-June. The other was seen at 330th Street Marsh in Watonwan County for a couple of weeks, starting the last day of May. The long stay of this latter bird allowed a large number of observers to see it.
Black-necked Stilts put in a good showing, with sightings in seven counties, mostly in the southwestern corner of the state. In June, a Piping Plover was found at Lower Red Lake in Beltrami County, and two more spent time in May and June at Morris Point in Lake of the Woods County. Also in June, Whimbrels were encountered in Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis counties. A Red Knot at Park Point, St. Louis County, on 18 June was unexpected. The bird provided the latest Minnesota record for an apparent northbound migrant.
Many observers enjoyed a Parasitic Jaeger in late July at Park Point, St. Louis County. There were also several interesting gulls that showed up during the season — Black-legged Kittiwakes at Lake Winnibigoshish, Cass County, and Upper Red Lake, Beltrami County, provided the second and third summer records, respectively, for the state. In early June, observers on Wisconsin Point saw a Little Gull over Minnesota waters of Lake Superior, St. Louis County. Also in June, a first Stearns County record California Gull visited the Paynesville W.T.P. for three days. A visitor that lingered longer was the Lesser Black-backed Gull that spent most of the summer at Mille Lacs Lake, Crow Wing and Mille Lacs counties.
Pacific Loons visited Douglas, Hennepin, and St. Louis counties during the season. Observers in five counties were treated to visits from Snowy Egrets in June and July. An immature Yellow-crowned Night Heron was a surprise at the Purgatory Creek Wetlands, Hennepin County, in late July. Also at that time, the Artichoke W.P.A. in Big Stone County hosted seven White-faced Ibises. A mid-June visit to Aitkin County by a Black Vulture was a nice surprise. More surprising yet was a first county and second state record Crested Caracara found and photographed by a family near Castle Danger, St. Louis County, on 8 June.
Two Eurasian Tree Sparrows were found in late July in Fillmore County. Carolina Wrens were encountered at three different locations in Winona County and at Cannon Falls in Goodhue County. Birders in Ramsey and Crow Wing counties enjoyed Northern Mockingbirds during early June. It was a good summer for Red Crossbills, with the most summer records ever. Reports came in from 30 counties.
Two Yellow-breasted Chats spent nearly a month in Minneopa State Park in Blue Earth County. Great-tailed Grackles continued to be found in southwestern Minnesota, with four in Jackson County and another in Lyon County. Yellow-throated Warblers put in appearances at Sucker Lake in Ramsey County and at Whitewater W.M.A., Olmsted County. Scott and Todd county birders were pleased to find Summer Tanagers during the first half of the summer. Freeborn and Meeker counties had their first county Blue Grosbeaks, in June. A Painted Bunting provided a seventh summer record for the state and a third Cook County record when it visited Sugar Loaf S.N.A. on 22 June.
Weather Summary: While temperatures in June averaged above normal statewide, in July they were 1.5º F below normal, the first July with a below normal statewide average since 2014. The warmest temperature for each month was 98º in Hallock on 21 June and 102º in both Canby and Granite Falls on 27 July. Coldest temperatures were 24º in Ely on 11 June and 33º in Goodridge (Pennington County) on 6 July.
Statewide average precipitation was only 50% of normal in June and 60% of normal in July, so it was a dry season in most areas. Severe weather on 23–25 June brought heavy rain to the northern third of the state, along with a few tornados. July had two major thunderstorm systems. One on 13 July swept through much of the state and brought damaging hail to many areas. Another on the night of 25–26 July created damaging winds and heavy rains, chiefly over the central and southern regions of the state.
Insufficiently documented records of Regular species: Greater Prairie-Chicken 7/23 Roseau (out of range); White-rumped Sandpiper 7/25 St. Louis (very early); Red-throated Loon 7/17 St. Louis (4, Duluth; record late — or early?); Sharp-shinned Hawk 6/1 Ramsey, 6/4 Hennepin, 6/6 Meeker, 6/15 Hennepin, 6/21 Carver, 6/25 Stearns, 7/23 Sherburne (late, all summer south reports require good details); Philadelphia Vireo 6/3 Hubbard, 6/4 Rice (apparent reliance on Merlin), 6/7 – 7/8 Carlton (away from breeding territory); Great-tailed Grackle 7/9 Nobles (identified from I-90).
Maps: A map is included for each species having at least one confirmed breeding record during 2023 (not necessarily just in summer). A county is colored black to show confirmed breeding, medium gray for probable breeding, and light gray for a summer observation. Those species with no breeding data have no map.
