BIRDING REPORT:

A VARIED THRUSH was reported this week from north of Detroit Lakes in Becker Co. For information on how to see this bird, please contact Betsy Beneke at 218-847-2641 or 847-6681.

That CAROLINA WREN is still present at the home of Eddy Edwards in Battle Lake, Otter Tail Co., kept hardy by a continuous supply of meal worms.

The CURVE-BILLED THRASHER is still present at a home near Breckenridge. For information on how to see this bird, please contact Anthony Hertzel at 612-780-7149.

SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen in good numbers in our area. Over last weekend up to six birds were seen at a time in the area of the Rothsay Wildlife Management Area and just southwest of the community of Lawndale, reported by Connie Norheim, Colin Gjervold and Steve Millard. Another spot to check for SHORT-EARED OWLS is southeast of Crookston adjacent to the Burnham Creek Wildlife Management Area on Co. Rd. 41 just east off of Co. Rd. 102. Birds seen there were reported by Andy and Kathy Radomski.

A SNOWY OWL was reported by Karen Terry on February 5th at the Foxhome Prairie, located 7 miles south of Rothsay in Wilkin Co. Check along the east-west minimum maintenance road at the southern edge of the prairie.

Another SNOWY OWL was seen by Mary Broten along Marshall Co. Rd. 3 approximately 6 miles northeast of Warren.

RED CROSSBILLS, HARRIS'S SPARROW, HOARY REDPOLL, GRAY JAY and PINE SISKIN were all seen this week at feeders in the Old Mill State Park, repored by manager, Mary Broten.

From Fergus Falls, Karen Terry reports seeing a GREAT BLUE HERON near the Mt. Faith bridge along the Otter Tail River in the southeast part of town. Other birds seen in Fergus Falls include CANADA GOOSE, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, COMMON GOLDENEYE, COMMON MERGANSER, HOODED MERGANSER, TRUMPETER SWAN, BALD EAGLE and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW.

In the Breckenridge/Wahpeton area Sally Hausken counted 75 COMMON GRACKLES flying overhead in a flock on February 8th.

Teresa Jaskiewicz, at her home north of Fergus Falls, is still feeding a HARRIS'S SPARROW which has now been joined by a SONG SPARROW.

ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS are still present in the area. Four birds were observed along Hwy. 32 between Fertile in Polk Co. and Red Lake Falls in Red Lake Co. on February 9th. Four more birds were reported from Marshall and Wilkin Counties.

On February 5th Jeannie Joppru birded along Hwy. 310 north of Roseau and found a BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER and three GREAT GRAY OWLS, all within two miles of the Canadian Border.

Other birds reported from northwest Minnesota this week include: SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, MERLIN, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, MOURNING DOVE, NORTHERN FLICKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, HORNED LARK, DARK-EYED JUNCO, EASTERN MEADOWLARK and RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD.
