A bird count was done along the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail on Saturday, May 13th. Despite TERRIBLE weather (temps in the 40's and 50's with wind and even snow in some areas!) a total of 184 species were seen!

Highlights included a PEREGRINE FALCON at Maplewood State Park in Otter Tail Co., a possible PRAIRIE FALCON at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Co., LONG-EARED OWL near the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge in Marshall Co. and a good-sized flocks of WILSON'S PHALAROPES and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the Crystal Sugar Ponds in Crookston, Polk Co. A timber wolf was also encountered by folks hiking along the Maakstad Trail at the Agassiz National Wildlife Refuge!

A CERULEAN WARBLER, along with CANADA WARBLERS and MOURNING WARBLERS were reported by Jeff Schultz in his yard just east of the town of Ottertail in Otter Tail Co. on May 17th.

Two SNOWY EGRETS were found by Steve Millard on the 17th at Lake Alice in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Co.

At Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Becker Co. on the 14th, Nancy Jackson found SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, DUNLIN, RUDDY TURNSTONE, YELLOWLEGS, and SORA. Other small unidentified "peeps" were also in the area.

On the 17th, Kay Hartness toured Cotton Lake in Becker Co. by boat and found CASPIAN TERN, FORSTER'S TERN, and BLACK TERNS, along with SPOTTED SANDPIPERS and one DUNLIN.

A number of NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS have taken up residence in wood duck boxes in Otter Tail Co. with confirmed nesting. There is also a report from Polk Co. Other northwest Minnesota residents are encouraged to check their wood duck boxes and report and owls found.

Thank you to everyone who reported sightings for this week's report - and a SPECIAL thanks to all of the birders who braved the elements and counted birds on May 13th!

The next scheduled update of this report is Friday, May 26th.

Enjoy the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds - May 19-21, 2000!
