Typical spring weather prevailed this week- warm and pleasant one day, and cold and windy the next. None the less the flowers are beginning to show in the woods and every day a new migrant appears.

>From Kittson County, Russ Reisz reported that during the last week or so, the numbers of migrants has swelled. MARBLED GODWITS and TREE SWALLOWS are to be seen everywhere. TRUMPETER SWANS, AMERICAN BITTERN, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and SHORT-EARED OWLS have been seen, and on April 25, a single SNOW BUNTING was seen in Caribou township in the far northeastern part of the county.

On April 26, Mary Broten reported an AMERICAN BITTERN along MN 1 east of the Red Lake Indian Reservation boundary in Beltrami County. On April 26, Pat Rice observed AMERICAN WOODCOCK, RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, HERMIT THRUSH, and CHIPPING SPARROW at their home near Bemidji.

Maggie Anderson reported that three EARED GREBES were found on April 27 at the north end of Headquarters Pool along the autotour route at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County. On May 2, Sue Braastad found two WILLETS near the north end of the refuge. There are currently many YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS near headquarters.

In Pennington County, Julian Sellers reported five SHORT-EARED OWLS along 190th St. NW one mile west of CR 10 on April 28.

Two or three BURROWING OWLS were found by Tom Will, Dave Bennett, and Jason Eckstein near Glacial Ridge NWR in Polk County on April 27. The owls were found in Tilden township on Nature Conservancy land north of CR 45 and are somewhat inaccessible, requiring at least a 1.5 mile hike to get to their location. Dan Svedarsky reported a COMMON RAVEN just south of Pankratz Prairie this week. Shelley Steva found 100 BANK SWALLOWS at a large gravel pit near Trail along MN 92 in the eastern part of the county on May 2. Julian Sellers observed two SHORT-EARED OWLS along CR 21 just west of the Pennington County line on April 28. and another on April 29 along CR 102 a mile NW of CR 46.

Migs Anderson had a male EASTERN TOWHEE at her home in Detroit Lakes, Becker County, on April 28.

On May 2, Matt Mecklenburg found a SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER in Clay County along MN 9 north of Downer on the east side of the road. The bird was subsequently relocated by several people at this location and along the county road a mile east of MN 9. At Felton Prairie, Ben Fritchman found the expected MARBLED GODWITS, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, and CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPURS, but there was no sign yet of either the Rock Wren or the Say's Phoebe. Pat Beauzay found a LE CONTE'S SPARROW at Blazing Star Prairie on April 27, and at Felton Prairie he reported BONAPARTE'S GULL, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS among others. On April 30, he found a 1st year CALIFORNIA GULL at the Clay County landfill. May 2, he saw AMERICAN BITTERN, SORA, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, BROWN THRASHER, and HARRIS'S SPARROW in the county.

Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported that as of May 1 , there was a WHITE-FACED IBIS in southwestern Otter Tail County. To get to the location, take CR 15 south out of Fergus Falls for 16 miles to 110th St (see the Rabbit River WPA sign), turn west 2 miles and look on the south side of the road. Ben Fritchman found the ibis again on May 2, and also reported GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, MARBLED GODWIT, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, and LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER. A WILLET was present along CR 15 a few miles north of 110th St., and CLIFF SWALLOWS and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were also found. On May 1, Dan and Sandy Thimgan found a GREEN HERON, and on the 2nd a CHIMNEY SWIFT. They report that the rookery at Lake Alice in Fergus Falls is full of GREAT EGRETS, and DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS. A BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was found at Grotto Lake on May 2.
