Migration is proceeding fast in the northwest. Already the warblers are arriving, along with the first of the flycatcher family. Weather continues to be dry through most of the area in spite of rain last weekend of up to 1 inch in places. It appears that the strong winds of last weekend blew a few species off course, as several unusual sightings were reported.
A WHITE-WINGED DOVE was reported by Larry Wilebski at his home in Lancaster on May 4. The bird was seen as recently as May 7. Larry's home is on the east side of US 59 in Lancaster where the Business District sign points west. The sign is in his yard.
From Roseau County, Beth Siverhus reported PURPLE MARTIN and CHIPPING SPARROW on May 5. On May 9, an AMERICAN AVOCET was discovered on the main dike road at the Roseau River WMA along the shoreline of Pool #1E about a mile west of CR 3.
Larry Wilebski reported on May 7 that shorebirds are starting to arrive at his Shorebird Park north of Lancaster , most being yellowlegs.
Pat Rice found SPOTTED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, and several species of warbler including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER in Clearwater County on May 9. Kelly Larson also mentioned SORA, and PINE SISKIN on that day.
Mary Lou Marchand in Beltrami County reported RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD on May 8, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE on May 2 in her yard. Pat Rice had a visit from a pair of COMMON LOONS , two EVENING GROSBEAKS , and 24 PINE SISKINS on May 4.
Marshall County sightings at Agassiz NWR sent in by Beth Siverhus on May 2 included GREATER YELLOWLEGS, and a GREAT HORNED OWL nesting at the woods along the Maakstad Trail. Gary Tischer reported an AMERICAN AVOCET at South Pool on May 6. Among other species seen at Agassiz NWR this week were PEREGRINE FALCON, BLACK TERN, CLIFF SWALLOWS, BROWN THRASHER, SEDGE WREN, MARSH WREN, SWAMP SPARROW, and BOBOLINK. Of note was a CATTLE EGRET seen at Headquarters on May 10. 22 SNOW GEESE were found on a field adjacent to the refuge on May 8.
In Pennington County in our yard new arrivals included RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, LEAST FLYCATCHER, and EASTERN KINGBIRD and today a TENNESSEE WARBLER. PINE SISKINS seem to be sticking around also.
I made a quick trip to Red Lake County on May 8 where I saw MERLIN, BROWN THRASHER, and LARK SPARROW. Anita Vettleson reported a BALTIMORE ORIOLE had come to her feeder this week.
Kim Eckert observed at least one HENSLOW'S SPARROW along Polk CR 45 about 1.5 miles west of MN 32 on May 9. The bird was singing just north of the parking area that is just west of the prairie-chicken blinds. He also found a SMITH'S LONGSPUR along US 2 about 4.5 miles west of MN 32 and a quarter mile south of the highway. A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD flew or was blown across US 2 east of Fosston on May 6, where it was observed by Peder Svingen. As the wind was roaring at the time, no one can guess where it is now. Pat Rice was in Polk County on May 9 where she reported an AMERICAN AVOCET at the Erskine wastewater treatment ponds. Other species seen in the county included MARBLED GODWIT, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, FRANKLIN'S GULL, BONAPARTE'S GULL, and BOBOLINK . Nathaniel Emery reported SORA, and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW at Glacial Ridge NWR on May 8. Bruce Flaig observed ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD on May 8.
Mel and Elaine Bennefeld found a GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN on the first fairway at the Ponderosa Golf Club in Clay County on May 8. Dean Reimer observed a WHIP-POOR-WILL in Moorhead on May 8, and a WORM-EATING WARBLER about 100-200 feet south of the 12th Ave toll bridge on May 6. A BLUE GROSBEAK came to the home of Bob O'Connor in Moorhead on May 6. Neither the warbler nor the grosbeak has been relocated since.
Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW in Otter Tail County on May 9. On the 8th, they saw GREEN HERON, CLIFF SWALLOW, and GRAY CATBIRD. Tom Smith reported a BROWN THRASHER there on May 7. At Glendalough State Park Dan and Sandy Thimgan found GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, SEDGE WREN, AMERICAN REDSTART, and 20 OVENBIRDS on May 10.
Ben Fritchman sent in a secondhand report of a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD at a home in Long Prairie on May 5.
Some other species reported by our observers included RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, EASTERN PHOEBE, EASTERN BLUEBIRD, YELLOW WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, CHIPPING SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW, SAVANNAH SPARROW, SONG SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
