This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, September 13, 2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.

The unsettled transitional weather this week appears to have kept the humans inside but the birds continue to move south. We are starting to see decreasing numbers of shorebirds, the sparrows are increasing, and the warblers are all but gone. As I compile this, the temperature is dropping and there is a threat of either frost or snow, depending on whether it clears.

On September 11, John Kroll found a SABINE'S GULL on the southeast side of Lake Osakis in Todd County.

Russ Wilber reported a TURKEY VULTURE flying over Crookston in Polk County on September 10.

Here in Pennington County on September 13, I saw ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, PURPLE FINCH, HOUSE FINCH, and AMERICAN GOLDFINCH all at the feeders together.

The weekly shorebird survey at Agassiz NWR in Marshall County tallied only 700 individuals, more than half of which were GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LESSER YELLOWLEGS, and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS. However it did include 2 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 15 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS and 14 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

Kelly Larson in Clearwater County on September 6 saw BARRED OWLS, COMMON NIGHTHAWKS, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, and PURPLE FINCHES. On September 13, there were still 3 RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS coming to her feeders south of Bagley.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County saw AMERICAN BITTERN, RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and an arctic race GREAT HORNED OWL at his place near Lancaster on September 12.

Thanks to Ben Fritchman, John Kroll, Kelly Larson, Larry Wilebski, and Russ Wilber for their reports.
