This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, November 8, 2007 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. You may also hear this report by calling (218)847-5743 or 1-800-433-1888.
The march into winter continues in the northwest as now the nights are cold, in the 20's, and days occasionally reaching 45 degrees. With no wind, that can be really pleasant, but when the frequent winds kick up, one is reminded to get out the hats and gloves. Winter residents are appearing at feeders and SNOW BUNTINGS are being seen all over the area.
Tom Smith in Otter Tail County reported SNOW BUNTINGS on November 5. 25 WILD TURKEYS appeared in the yard of Jeff and Amy Drake on November 6. They were surprised to see RUFFED GROUSE displaying on November 3.
In Becker County, Beau Shroyer discovered a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE in Detroit Lakes on Bridgeview Lane which is a short road at the south end of the lake. The bird was seen in the yard with the martin house.
Zeann Linder reported that Keith Wheeler had a pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS in his yard in Thief River Falls in Pennington County on November 4.
While hunting in Marshall County, Kevin Englesrud saw RUFFED GROUSE and two BALD EAGLES last weekend. Greg Knutson at Agassiz NWR saw an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER at South Pool on November 5, and a SOLITARY SANDPIPER there on November 7. Several NORTHERN SHRIKES have been seen this week, and November 8, several EVENING GROSBEAKS came to the office feeder. About 20 BALD EAGLES are present at the refuge this week. Most of the water is frozen on the refuge as of this writing, but some open water remains on Headquarters Pool where a variety of waterfowl remain. Gary Tischer reported a WESTERN MEADOWLARK seen outside the refuge along CR 7 this week.
Lyle and Sally Lauber reported that a female NORTHERN CARDINAL appeared in their yard at Dixon Lake in Itasca County on November 5. Last week the male was there. TREE SPARROWS and a PINE GROSBEAK were there on November 3.
Russ Reisz saw many of the usual late fall migrants in Roseau County this week, including NORTHERN HARRIER and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, but the best was a belated report of a BOREAL CHICKADEE which he saw on October 20 in his yard in Greenbush.
Thanks to Beau Shroyer, Gary Tischer, Greg Knutson, Jeff and Amy Drake, Kevin Englesrud, Lyle and Sally Lauber, Russ Reisz, Tom Smith, and Zeann Linder for their reports.
