Leaves are struggling to expand and grow in the northwest, but rain received on Thursday will surely help. Warmer temperatures will also help. Woods are carpeted with wildflowers, and wild fruit trees are all in blossom. Migration is winding down, but the warblers have finally arrived and are not expected to stick around for long, as it is late already.
Martin Kehoe, Cindi McDougall , and Jenny Moorman did a Big Day in Lake of the Woods County on May 24. Among the species seen were 16 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE on a lek along CR 75, and COMMON TERN, CASPIAN TERN, and WINTER WREN at Zippel Bay SP. A GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER was among the list of 17 warbler species seen in the county.
Steve Patterson reported an INDIGO BUNTING on the north side of Lake Bemidji in Beltrami County on May 25, and a SCARLET TANAGER on the shore of Big Turtle Lake on May 28. On May 29 I saw a GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER at the Big Bog SRA; PALM WARBLER and MOURNING WARBLER were among the warblers seen .
On May 26, four of us did a Big Day in Clearwater County where we found 122 species during a difficult, cold misty day. We found good numbers of warblers in the morning at Itasca SP including BAY-BREASTED WARBLER and MOURNING WARBLER. Other species of note included RUDDY DUCK, 42 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, and 3 CASPIAN TERNS at the Clearbrook WTP, a DICKCISSEL a few miles northwest of Bagley, and EVENING GROSBEAKS at Bert's cabins at Itasca SP. On May 29, Pat DeWenter found 13 warbler species at Itasca SP including GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER. Also seen was a HERMIT THRUSH. Kelly Larson reported GREEN HERONS on May 26 at the farm; at Sandy Lake she saw AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and DUNLIN; other species seen in the county included BROWN THRASHER in Bagley, and INDIGO BUNTINGS.
Diana Morkassel in Marshall County near Warren reported INDIGO BUNTING on May 23, ORCHARD ORIOLES on May 25 , and SCARLET TANAGER on May 28. Cliff Steinhauer saw 4 TURKEY VULTURES near Agassiz NWR on May 26.
Shelley Steva saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER in Plummer in Red Lake County on May 29.
Nathaniel Emery, reporting from the Glacial Ridge Project, mentioned nesting GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, NORTHERN HARRIER,MARBLED GODWIT, UPLAND SANDPIPERS, and a pair of SANDHILL CRANES with two colts on May 26. Other species seen included SAVANNAH SPARROW, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, and BOBOLINK. On May 28, there were two BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, and 13 AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVERS at Glacial Ridge.
Beau Shroyer reported 9 RUDDY TURNSTONES at the city beach in Detroit Lake, Becker County, on May 27.
Dan and Sandy Thimgan in Otter Tail County observed a COMMON MOORHEN in the central part of the county on May 23. Contact Dan and Sandy @ 218-862-5594 for more information if you wish to see the bird.
From Cass County, Ben Wieland reported a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD near the intersection of CR 41 and MN 87 near the Hubbard County line on May 26. On that day, there was an ORCHARD ORIOLE at Pine Mountain Lake, and a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER near Pillager along CR 36. Ben and his group found 22 warbler species in Cass County on Memorial Day.
