Spring is not here yet in the northwest but we can see it from here! At least we hope so. Weather has alternated between extreme cold and pleasant warmth this week, a hint of the fickleness of spring.

Gretchen Mehmel saw a SNOWY OWL at Cecil's Landing on the Roosevelt Road in Lake of the Woods County on January 30, and reported one seen at a house northwest of Roosevelt in Roseau County the previous day.

Beth Siverhus saw a NORTHERN SHRIKE in Roseau County near Roseau on February 5.

Donna and Leon Thoreson near Climax in Polk County have had a light phase GREAT HORNED OWL in their yard for about two weeks. Other species seen there included BLACK-BILLED MAPGIE, NORTHERN SHRIKE, SNOW BUNTINGS, COMMON REDPOLLS, and PINE SISKINS.

Ron Erpelding and Herb Dingmann were birding in Becker County near Detroit Lakes on January 31 where they saw COMMON REDPOLLS and PINE SISKINS at the home of Dave and Betty Hochhalter.

In Wilkin County, Ron and Herb spotted an immature GOLDEN EAGLE on the west side of MN 9 about 5 miles northeast of Breckenridge on January 31. Other species seen in Wilkin County included COMMON REDPOLLS, and PINE SISKINS near Breckenridge.

In Grant County, Ron and Herb saw a WILD TURKEY on the north side of MN 78 in the northeastern part of the county.

Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Gretchen Mehmel, Ron Erpelding, Herb Dingmann, and Donna and Leon Thoreson for their reports.
