We thought spring had arrived last week, and apparently the birds did too, as many are arriving even as we get cold winds and snow flurries again. New arrivals this week include the bright colored birds of spring - the orioles, grosbeaks, and a few warblers.
Birds reported by nearly everyone include TURKEY VULTURE, BROWN THRASHER, CHIPPING SPARROW, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW, HARRIS'S SPARROW, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, and BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
Susan Olin at Zippel Bay State Park reported three SANDHILL CRANES south of CR 8 in Lake of the Woods County on May 8. Gretchen Mehmel in the Red Lake WMA observed an AMERICAN BITTERN, a COMMON RAVEN nest with young south of the Hogsback Road, a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, and a BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER this week.
In Clearwater County, Kelly Larson observed SORA, BROWN THRASHER, PINE WARBLER, and INDIGO BUNTING among many others.
Kelly Gillund reported a TURKEY VULTURE in Marshall County on May 10, three miles south of Middle River. RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and BALTIMORE ORIOLE were observed by Cliff Steinhauer on May 13. Gary Tischer sent in a report of species arriving at Agassiz NWR. A TRUMPETER SWAN was seen at Parker Pool on May 8. Other species sighted on that day included TURKEY VULTURE, and at headquarters, a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW. On May 9, Greg Knutsen found a SANDERLING at Ditch 11. On the 12th, he and Maggie Anderson saw an EASTERN TOWHEE at headquarters; an EASTERN KINGBIRD showed up on May 13 , and many BARN SWALLOWS on May 14. The first goose broods were seen on May 11 at Agassiz NWR.
Shelley Steva reported a BROAD-WINGED HAWK migrating over Thief River Falls in Pennington County on May 7, and on May 8, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen two miles east of the Seven Clans Casino.
Karen Suldahl in Polk County observed CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, INDIGO BUNTING, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK on May 11 in Climax.
Scott Kahan found MARBLED GODWITS at Slininger WPA in Norman County on May 8.
Mel and Elaine Bennefeld observed RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and HARRIS'S SPARROWS among others at Pondorosa Golf Club in Clay County on May 7.
Scott Kahan reported RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD at Detroit Lakes in Becker County on May 8. Rod Anton observed YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS on May 7. SANDERLINGS and SPOTTED SANDPIPERS were seen by Beau Shroyer on the beach at Detroit Lakes on May 13. Warbler species seen in the area included NASHVILLE WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and BLACKPOLL.
In Otter Tail County, Brad and Dee Ehlers reported RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD and an AMERICAN REDSTART on May 12. Alma Ronningen saw a VEERY on May 10, AMERICAN BITTERN and a YELLOW WARBLER on May 11. Among the species reported by Dan and Sandy Thimgan on May 13 were SORA , VIRGINIA RAIL, WESTERN GREBE, PEREGRINE FALCON, UPLAND SANDPIPER, BLACK TERN, CHIMNEY SWIFT, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, GRAY CATBIRD, YELLOW WARBLER, and BOBOLINK .
Judith Clayton in Alexandria , Douglas County, reported a HARRIS'S SPARROW on May 12.
