Spring has really come to the northwest this week, although it seems to have had a relapse tonight. That last hasn't deterred the first big wave of migrants. I have many reports of CANADA GOOSE, SANDHILL CRANES,AMERICAN ROBINS,DARK-EYED JUNCOS, and yellowing AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES.

Tom and Sheryl Smith in Otter Tail County reported a EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE in their yard on March 22. Other species they mentioned included AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, and BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS. Brad and Dee Ehlers reported LESSER SCAUP and RING-NECKED DUCK at the Otter Tail Lake inlet on March 23, and several SANDHILL CRANES flying over Glendalough SP. Dan and Sandy Thimgan on March 23, reported EASTERN BLUEBIRD and BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD; on March 24, they saw BUFFLEHEAD and RED-TAILED HAWK. Dan and Sandy also had an Oregon race DARK-EYED JUNCO in their yard. Alma Ronningen at Dent on March 25 observed RED-TAILED HAWK , and AMERICAN KESTREL among others.

Sandy Aubol saw two TRUMPETER SWANS a couple of miles east of the intersection of CR 17 with US 75 in Polk County on Marcy 20. Bette Olson saw about 30 TRUMPETER SWANS near Maple Lake on March 20.

Red Lake County sightings by Shelley Steva on March 22 included SHARP-SHINNED HAWK and AMERICAN ROBIN in Oklee; on March 23, she saw RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and a WESTERN MEADOWLARK near Plummer. March 24, she saw a RED-TAILED HAWK, and two small flocks of LAPLAND LONGSPURS.

In Pennington County, on March 20, I found a lek with 18 SHARP-TAILED GROUSE a few miles east of Thief River Falls. They were along 160th St between 210 St. NE and 220 St. NE. Other species seen that day included 5 COMMON GOLDENEYE, NORTHERN HARRIER, BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES, and HORNED LARKS. COMMON MERGANSERS appeared on the Red Lake River on March 24, followed by HOODED MERGANSERS on March 25.

Gary Tischer reported from Agassiz NWR that a HERRING GULL flew over South Pool on March 19 . A few SNOW BUNTINGS were seen along CR 7 that day also. Other new species included TRUMPETER SWAN, and HOODED MERGANSER. The BALD EAGLE pair are on a nest at Parker Pool. On March 22 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were seen at Agassiz, and a ROSS'S GOOSE was spotted on the west side. This week, there have been sightings of TUNDRA SWAN, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, MALLARD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, RED-TAILED HAWK, and WILSON'S SNIPE at the refuge.

Doug Johnson in Bemidji, reported a calling NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL in his yard on March 22.

Kelly Larson in Clearwater County on March 22 reported RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, and PURPLE FINCH; on March 23 she saw SANDHILL CRANE and AMERICAN TREE SPARROW;CANADA GOOSE, both TUNDRA SWANS and TRUMPETER SWANS, and NORTHERN PINTAIL were seen in Clearwater County on March 25.

Larry Wilebski in Kittson County on March 22, reported HOODED MERGANSER, RED-TAILED HAWK, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and PURPLE FINCH near Lancaster.
