fall is definitely here now, migration is picking up, weather is even more changeable and cooler, and flower beds and gardens are starting to look "tired". Gardeners are checking the forecast daily, looking for frost warnings, as they try to maximize the harvest.
The best sighting this week was confirmed as a YELLOW-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON by Kim Eckert's MOU weekend group. The bird was first seen and reported last week as a black-crowned night-heron at the Warroad campground on September 1.
Alma Ronningen in Otter Tail County reported that she had a ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK at the feeder on September 7, a BALTIMORE ORIOLE on September 8, and still three RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS on September 9. SANDHILL CRANES were seen on September 8.
In Polk County, Sandy Aubol observed two PEREGRINE FALCONS at the East Grand Forks north end water tower on September 5. On the 2nd, she saw a BLUE-HEADED VIREO in her yard. At the Thief River Falls wastewater treatment ponds in Pennington County, the MOU group found an AMERICAN BLACK DUCK and an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER. A drive into western Marshall County by Sandy Aubol on September 6 yielded sightings of 89 SANDHILL CRANES, three AMERICAN KESTRELS, a BALD EAGLE, 5 TURKEY VULTURES, and 16 RED-TAILED HAWKS. She also reported several NORTHERN FLICKERS and two RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS. The MOU group found shorebirds at Webster Pool in the interior of Agassiz NWR, and at the new impoundment north of the Wetlands , Pines, and Prairies Audubon Sanctuary near Warren. Other species seen in Marshall County included two SWAINSON'S HAWKS, GRAY PARTRIDGE, SHARP-TAILED GROUSE, and AMERICAN BLACK DUCK. A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen along MN 72 near the Beltrami- Lake of the Woods County line. In Kittson County, three SHORT-EARED OWLS were found. The MOU group also saw a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER at Lake Bronson State Park. On September 4, a SWAINSON'S HAWK, and four LE CONTE'S SPARROWS were among the many species seen. Three ROSS'S GEESE were seen at the Greenbush wastewater treatment ponds in Roseau County on September 3. Also on that day, the MOU group found WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS along the Thompson Forest Road.
