It has been an interesting weather week throughout the state. In the far northwest, the wonderful thawing has stopped when the big storm blew through the region. Interestingly, little or no snow or rain fell north of US 2 while just a few miles south many inches were deposited. It had a cut off line like a summer thunderstorm, and in fact there was some thunder in some places. It has moved the birds around, and more north bound migrants have moved into the far northern counties.
Alma Ronningen in Otter Tail County reported BALD EAGLE, SHARP-SHINNED HAWK, AMERICAN ROBIN, COMMON REDPOLL, and HOUSE FINCH on March 22. On March 24, a DARK-EYED JUNCO sang in the yard.
Marshall Howe reported 8 COMMON MERGANSERS in Park Rapids ,MALLARD, RED-TAILED HAWK, and PINE SISKIN in Hubbard County on March 24.
In Becker County, Beau Shroyer observed a flock of about 30 AMERICAN ROBINS and another similar flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS in Detroit Lakes on March 24.
Stephen Rossiter visited Rydell NWR on March 21 where he saw 15 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS and some DARK-EYED JUNCOS. Other species seen in Polk County included a PIED-BILLED GREBE, BALD EAGLE, NORTHERN HARRIER, HORNED LARK, and even an EASTERN BLUEBIRD near Fisher.
Shelley Steva spotted 6 COMMON GOLDENEYE in the Lost River near Oklee in Red Lake County on March 21.
A BALD EAGLE was seen by Andy Joppru west of St. Hilaire in Pennington County on March 18. Zeann Linder reported that MERLINS were heard this week in Thief River Falls.
Maggie Anderson reported from Agassiz NWF in Marshall County that several CANADA GEESE returned on March 15. NORTHERN HARRIER and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen on March 17, SANDHILL CRANES were heard on March 19, WESTERN MEADOWLARK was seen at Farmes Pool, AMERICAN KESTREL returned on March 20. RED-TAILED HAWK and MOURNING DOVE returned on March 20.
Shelley Steva reported two TRUMPETER SWANS in Clearwater County on March 18. Kelly Larson reported SANDHILL CRANE, RED-TAILED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and NORTHERN HARRIER near Bagley on March 21. AMERICAN ROBIN, COMMON REDPOLL, HOARY REDPOLL, PINE SISKIN, and PURPLE FINCH were seen on March 22, and AMERICAN KESTREL and COMMON GOLDENEYE on March 23.
At Larry Wilebski's cabin in Kittson County at least two HOARY REDPOLLS were seen among the COMMON REDPOLLS at the feeders there on March 19. Not far away was a GREAT HORNED OWL nest with parents on guard.
Gretchen Mehmel reported a HOARY REDPOLL at the Norris Camp feeders on March 18.
