This is the Northwest Minnesota Birding Report for Thursday, may 31, 2012 sponsored by the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce. After nearly a week of cold, finally we have received some warm temperatures, and migration seems to have resumed as the stragglers are appearing. Birding is somewhat difficult now as the leaves are fully out . Not many new migrants are coming through, but there are greater numbers of resident birds. Young of several species are being fed by adults in many yards. Here in Pennington County, Karie Stranberg documented a robin's nest with photos of mother and young these last weeks. Steve Midthune in Becker County reported that there are still some interesting shorebirds at Hamden Slough NWR this week. Included are SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, RUDDY TURNSTONE, and WILLET, all still there as of May 31. Dozens of RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRDS were in the yard of Vicki Stolz on May 28 , and on May 31, a flock of 20 TUNDRA SWANS flew over her home near Fisher in Polk County. Russ Wilbur reported several RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS at the East Grand Forks campground on May 30. Also in East Grand Forks, Sandy Aubol reported on May 26, HOUSE FINCH fledglings and PINE SISKINS in her yard. A bike ride through the Greenway yielded sightings of MERLIN, COMMON NIGHTHAWK, and INDIGO BUNTING on May 30. At Goose Lake in Pennington County, Bill Blackburn found 2 WHIMBRELS on May 27. Gary Tischer observed a COMMON NIGHTHAWK flying over Thief River Falls on May 30. I saw a GRAY PARTRIDGE along Johnson Drive east of Thief River Falls on May 30, and today, May 31, a MOURNING WARBLER was singing in our yard. From Agassiz NWR, Lynda Knutsen sent a report of the highlight species seen by the Detroit Lakes Festival birders on May 20 that just missed last week's report. Included were 1 WHITE-FACED IBIS, 30 WILLETS, 15 HUDSONIAN GODWITS and assorted other shorebirds. On May 21, a RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was seen at headquarters by Lynda Knutsen. Warblers seen there on May 22 included CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, BLACKPOLL, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. On May 23, Jim Graham saw a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON . Gregg Knutsen reported 27 WESTERN GREBES and 25 CANVASBACKS on Headquarters Pool on May 24. A CANADA WARBLER was spotted at headquarters on May 26.Two HORNED GREBES and 300 BLACK TERNS were seen on May 30 on Agassiz Pool.
