Finally it seems that summer is here With the warmer weather, the leaves are finally starting to come out, and the migration is picking up. It does seem that most of the warblers seem to be moving along the Red River and also through the forested areas, leaving the majority of the northwestern prairie areas relatively free of migrant warblers. A quick trip to Agassiz NWR this afternoon revealed nearly all the migrants to be those that nest there. Our yard here in Pennington County was the same.
Six RED KNOTS were found by Mark Otnes in a large flock of shorebirds at the North Ottawa impoundment just north of Charlesville on May 22. Other shorebirds seen there included BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER, DUNLIN, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER, WILLET, MARBLED GODWIT, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER.
Warblers reported this week included OVEN BIRD, NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH, BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, NASHVILLE WARBLER,MOURNING WARBLER, KENTUCKY WARBLER, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, AMERICAN REDSTART, CAPE MAY WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, YELLOW WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, and WILSON'S WARBLER.
Beth Siverhus was in Lake of the Woods County on May 17 where she found BROAD-WINGED HAWK, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, WINTER WREN, SWAMP SPARROW, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER among others.
On May 16 in Roseau County, Beth saw LE CONTE'S SPARROW. On the 17th she visited the area of the Norland impoundment. Along 440 Ave about a half mile north of MN 11, she observed some shorebirds including a large flock of WILSON'S PHALAROPES, some SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS, MARBLED GODWITS, and LESSER YELLOWLEGS. SANDHILL CRANES were also in the area of the impoundment as well as SORA, PIED-BILLED GREBES, RED-NECKED GREBES, FRANKLIN'S GULLS ,and many duck species. Warroad birds included TREE SWALLOWS, CLIFF SWALLOWS, PURPLE MARTINS, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, HARRIS'S SPARROWS, CHIPPING SPARROWS, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS and others.
Connie Cox at Itasca State Park in Clearwater County, sent in a long list including OSPREY,SOLITARY SANDPIPER, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, five swallows, WINTER WREN, GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, VARIED THRUSH, GRAY CATBIRD, 12 warbler species, INDIGO BUNTING, and PURPLE FINCH. A BARRED OWL, RUFFED GROUSE, and BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER were heard there this week.
Here in Pennington County, my excitement for the week was a WESTERN TANAGER that stayed for about an hour on May 16. The jelly feeders are attracting lots of BALTIMORE ORIOLES, one YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and one BAY-BREASTED WARBLER. Shelley Steva saw a MARBLED GODWIT along CR 23 on May 19.
Shelley Steva reported an UPLAND SANDPIPER in Red Lake County north of Oklee on May 20.
Joanne Johnson reported RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, OVENBIRD, PALM WARBLER, and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER in Polk County on May 16. ORCHARD ORIOLES were observed by Sandy Aubol in East Grand Forks on May 19. On May 20, she saw a wave of warblers including MOURNING WARBLER, TENNESSEE WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and BLACKPOLL WARBLER. WINTER WREN and HOUSE WREN were also seen on May 20. On May 21, she had INDIGO BUNTING and CHIMNEY SWIFT, and on the 22nd, a NORTHERN PARULA was seen . Most of these species were seen either in her yard in East Grand Forks or along the Red River Greenway.
From Becker County, Linda Schumann reported RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Rainbow Resort on May 16. The Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds tour to Hamden Slough reported GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKEN, SORA, SANDHILL CRANES, and BOBOLINKS among their sightings on May 16. Dave and Betty Hochhalter in Detroit Lakes reported many species this week including INDIGO BUNTING, and SCARLET TANAGER.
Marshall Howe reporting from Hubbard County this week mentioned CASPIAN TERN, EASTERN KINGBIRD, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, GRAY CATBIRD, INDIGO BUNTING, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and CAPE MAY WARBLER on May 17, GREEN HERON, SWAINSON'S THRUSH, and 12 species of warbler on May 18, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER and GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH on May 19, and PHILADLEPHIA VIREO on May 21.
From Otter Tail County, Gary and Marion Otnes reported RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, KENTUCKY WARBLER, and ORCHARD ORIOLE on May 20. The KENTUCKY WARBLER was only seen once. Dan and Sandy Thimgan reported NASHVILLE WARBLER and ORCHARD ORIOLE on May 19, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT on May 20, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER on May 21. May 22 brought RED-SHOULDERED HAWK , GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER , YELLOW-THROATED VIREO, RED-EYED VIREO, WARBLING VIREO, and AMERICAN REDSTART.
Benjamin Eckhoff in Douglas County reported GREEN HERON, WESTERN GREBE, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, BROWN THRASHER, ORCHARD ORIOLE, and ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK this week.
