Temperatures have moderated this week in the northwest, but many days have been marred by strong winds, which are howling again tonight. Snow still carpets the area, but bare patches are appearing on open fields and the wind tonight is bringing in possible freezing rain and/or snow. That will make for slippery travel this weekend.
Alice Martin reported a SNOWY OWL at the intersection of Otter Tail County roads 76 and 19 on January 18. Other species seen in the county included ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, TRUMPETER SWANS near Perham. A BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE was seen at the intersection of county roads 75 and 76.
In Detroit Lakes in Becker County, Denny and Barb Martin saw BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on January 19, one of the very few sightings of that species reported in the area this winter. The female VARIED THRUSH is still coming to the feeders of Kay Hartness in Detroit Lakes.
Barb and Denny found 40 GREATER PRAIRIE-CHICKENS and a flock of BLACK-BILLED MAGPIES at Bluestem Prairie in Clay County on January 21.
Near Shelley in Norman County, two BALD EAGLES were seen by Shelley Steva on January 14.
Shelley Steva saw a SNOWY OWL on January 14 at the intersection of US 75 and US 2 on the north side of Crookston in Polk County. Sandy Aubol observed a GOLDEN EAGLE along CR 21 near Sherack on January 18, and four SNOWY OWLS were seen in the Sherack area that day. Sandy saw six CEDAR WAXWINGS in East Grand Forks on the 18th also. Many SNOW BUNTINGS and a sprinkling of LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen in the Sherack area this week. Emily Hutchins reported a GREAT HORNED OWL near Mentor on January 19. Several ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen in Polk County on January 16 between Grand Forks and the Pennington County line.
A NORTHERN HAWK OWL is being seen along Red Lake County Road 1 on either side of the intersection with US 59 since January 20.
Barb and Denny Martin found a SNOWY OWL along Pennington CR 23 a mile and a half south of CR 3 on January 20. I was unable to relocate that bird today or yesterday. Barb and Denny found a GOLDEN EAGLE in far southeastern Pennington County where they also saw numerous SHARP-TAILED GROUSE and a NORTHERN SHRIKE. I observed a flock of WILD TURKEYS in the western part of the county on January 16.
The NORTHERN HAWK OWL first found on the Agassiz CBC was seen again by numerous people on January 18 at the intersection of Marshall CR 12 and 350th St NE where it was first found. On January 16, I found a NORTHERN SHRIKE in the vicinity, and a flock of SHARP-TAILED GROUSE. COMMON REDPOLLS were seen in several places in Marshall County this weekend.
From Beltrami County, Christine Herwig reported a flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS at the DNR office at the north end of Lake Bemidji on January 21.
A group of us went to Roseau County on January 18 where we found up to eight NORTHERN HAWK OWLS north of Roseau. Other species seen in the area included COMMON RAVEN, GRAY JAY, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and SNOW BUNTINGS.
