This has been a very pleasant week in most of the northwest. Baby birds are everywhere, and many species are starting a second nesting.
Beth Siverhus sent in a report of species found on the Rapid River Breeding Bird Survey conducted on June 28. This is somewhat belated, but I thought you might be interested to know that 14 species of warblers were found including CONNECTICUT WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, MAGNOLIA WARBLER, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, BLACKBURNIAN WARBLER, and NASHVILLE WARBLER. Some of the other species reported were WINTER WREN, INDIGO BUNTING, WOOD THRUSH, HERMIT THRUSH, and RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.
In Roseau County, Beth reported an apparently nesting MARBLED GODWIT along CR 5 south of Warroad. In Warroad on July 8 were GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER , PURPLE MARTINS , AMERICAN ROBINS on their third nesting, and GRAY CATBIRDS among others.
From Pennington County, Shelley Steva saw a MERLIN flying over the city of Thief River Falls on July 9.
On July 3, Shelley and I found an AMERICAN AVOCET on the side of the East Grand Forks wastewater treatment ponds in Polk County. Other species seen included some of the EARED GREBES reported by Sandy Aubol last week.
Charlene Nelson in Grant County reported many fledglings of several species including BALTIMORE ORIOLES, BROWN THRASHERS, and GRAY CATBIRDS. HOUSE WRENS there are starting a second nest.
Thanks to Beth Siverhus, Charlene Nelson, and Shelley Steva for their reports. Please get your sightings in early for the next report as it will be coming out on Wednesday afternoon.
