The weather has definitely transitioned into summer now, with rain and high temperatures. Flowers are blooming everywhere, both in gardens and in the wild. Birds are all going about the business of raising the young of the year. Young waterfowl are starting to be seen.
In Lake of the Woods County, Shelley Steva and I observed and photographed a pair of BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS who are nesting at Norris Camp. By the sound of it, the young are getting pretty big and will soon be out of the nest. Two other nests have been found along the Thompson Forest Road in the burned over area left after the big fire last summer.
Katie Haws sent in a sighting of a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD by Mike Zicus on Jackpine Road in Bemidji, Beltrami County on June 2. Nancy Wasik saw a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE along US 2 near Shevlin on June 2.
Connie Cox at Itasca State Park sent in the week's list which included eleven species of warblers, VEERY, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW , among others. Most of those warblers will be nesting there.
In Pennington County on June 2, Emily Hutchins and Ross Hier observed a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK along CR 10, known as the Pembina Trail, where it crosses the Pembina WMA . On June 5, a COMMON NIGHTHAWK was seen hawking insects over our yard east of Thief River Falls.
Mark Otnes reported that a SPOTTED TOWHEE is again being seen at Buffalo River State Park in Clay County. It was seen on the south side of the river on the main trail leading from the main parking lot to the science center as you exit the woods into the second clearing.
Jess Searcy found a PINE WARBLER and a HERMIT THRUSH at Five Lakes Resort in Otter Tail County on June 3.
