We are enjoying the warm weather in the northwest, but in the far northern part of the area, we could use a shot of rain. Lawns and gardens are getting dry. Adult birds are very busy trying to find enough to keep the babies alive, and feeders are hosting quite a few young birds just learning the ropes. Wildflowers are fully in blossom , and the prairies are lovely right now.
At the N. Ottawa impoundment in northern Grant County, the KING RAILS and BLACK-NECKED STILTS were still being seen as of last weekend. Many other waterfowl, and waders can be found there, and there is also a variety of shorebirds there.
Ben Eckhoff reported a KRIDER'S RED-TAILED HAWK east of Glendalough SP in Otter Tail County on July 19.
In Clay County, Bob Williams relocated two SAY'S PHOEBES at Felton Prairie on July 15.
Here in the yard in Pennington County near Thief River Falls, I was surprised to hear a TENNESSEE WARBLER on July 14. On July 16, four or five PINE SISKINS came to the feeder. They left right away, and haven't been back. Was it something I said?
Gavin Anderson observed a SWAINSON'S HAWK just east of Holt, Marshall County, on July 16.
Gavin also visited the Roseau WTP in Roseau County on July 16 where he found a wide variety of duck species including WOOD DUCK, CANVASBACK, REDHEADS, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and HOODED MERGANSERS. Other species seen included MARBLED GODWIT, KILLDEER, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, WILSON'S PHALAROPE, SPOTTED SANDPIPER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, FRANKLIN’S GULL, BLACK TERN, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, BREWER’S BLACKBIRDS and many others.
