For the past few days, we have been having winter weather, with the morning temperature here this morning at or near zero in Thief River Falls. Snow carpets the ground, and bird activity has increased at the feeders. Species variety has , however, decreased. Most feeders are hosting the typical winter residents and late fall visitors.
In Kittson County, Larry Wilebski reported that a BALTIMORE ORIOLE is still at his feeders. A Leucistic DARK-EYED JUNCO is in the flock of birds he is feeding.
Becca Engdahl reported an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN at Knutson Dam in Beltrami County on November 8.
Two EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were reported by Heidi Hughes along Centennial Drive in Thief River Falls, Pennington County, on November 5.
Beau Schroyer observe six PINE GROSBEAKS at his place north of Detroit Lakes in Becker County on November 9.
From Hubbard County, Marshall Howe reported about 200 SNOW BUNTINGS in Dorset, some LAPLAND LONGSPURS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and a BLACK-BILLED MAGPIE on November 2. A flock of migrating TUNDRA SWANS was seen on November 4, while two COMMON LOONS remained on the lake on November 8.
Various observers reported SURF SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, BLACK SCOTERS, and a LONG-TAILED DUCK on Lake Osakis in Todd County this week. NASHVILLE WARBLER was also reported.
Gary and Marion Otnes, reporting from Otter Tail County saw NORTHERN SHRIKE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, RED-TAILED HAWK, CEDAR WAXWINGS, an AMERICAN KESTREL , RING-NECKED PHEASANT, TRUMPETER SWANS and five RED CROSSBILLS in the Fergus Falls area. On a lake near the Buse township hall they found BLACK SCOTER and two HORNED GREBES. Charlene Nelson reported a flock of 200 SANDHILL CRANES in Otter Tail County.
At Deep Portage Learning Center in Cass County, Dale Yerger observed BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS on November 6.
Ben Eckhoff continues to report a late BALTIMORE ORIOLE at the visitor center at Lake Carlos SP in Douglas County as recently as November 8.
A RED CROSSBILL visited the home of Charlene Nelson near Elbow Lake in Grant County on November 5. Other species seen there included RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, HARRIS'S SPARROW, FOX SPARROW, and PINE SISKIN. Wayne Perala reported that the ibis have left the N. Ottawa Impoundment as of November 8, but a GREAT HORNED OWL, some COMMON REDPOLLS, and a few yellowlegs were seen there.
