This is the Duluth Birding Report for Thursday, June 15th, 2000, sponsored by the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union.
Cold or rainy weather almost all week has limited birding activity in the area and there is little new to report.
A SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was seen by Judd Brink on Saturday the 10th, in the parking area next to the Sky Harbor Airport on Minnesota Point. Other birders saw the bird later in the day and again on Sunday morning, but it has not been relocated since. A BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO was seen at this location yesterday.
That CINNAMON TEAL at the Embarrass rice paddies has also not been seen since the initial sighting on Thursday, June 8th.
The most recent sightings of GREAT GRAY OWL in the area have been along Owl Ave or County Road 202/203 in the Sax-Zim area, along County Road 7 north of 133, also in Sax-Zim, and in Aitkin County along County Road 18 north of Palisade.
CONNECTICUT WARBLERS and YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHERS, which are often sought by birders from out-of-town, can be found in suitable habitat in the Sax-Zim area, especially along Owl Avenue and County Road 52. Solid stands of tamarack are usually best. MOURNING WARBLERS are found throughout the area in suitable deciduous habitat.
Unless something unusual is seen in the meantime which needs to be reported immediately, the Duluth Birding Report is normally updated once a week on Thursdays, so that the next scheduled update will be on June 22nd. The phone number is (218) 525-5952, and callers can leave a message if they wish after the tone at the end of the tape. Also note that a message can be left without having to wait for the birding report to end: after the tape starts playing, push 5 on a touch-tone phone, the tape will then stop, the tone will sound and you can leave your message.
The Duluth Birding Report is sponsored and funded by the Minnesota
Ornithologists' Union (MOU), the state bird club, as a service to its
members. For more information on the MOU, either write us c/o the Bell
